Coverage

UK, XI and EU prefixes in one tool

Since Brexit, Great Britain issues GB EORI numbers via HMRC, while EU member states continue under the shared EOS system. Northern Ireland trade under the Windsor Framework may also require an XI number (validated via EU EOS). This checker covers all three.

How the check works

Enter a complete EORI number including the two-letter country prefix. We first validate the format (prefix + alphanumeric identifier). For GB numbers we query the free HMRC Check EORI API. For XI and EU prefixes we call the European Commission’s EOS SOAP validation interface — the same official source used by the public EOS checker.

When the trader has consented to publication, the response may also include the registered name and address (most often for GB). Results are cached briefly so repeat checks stay fast.

EORI validation results explained

  • Valid / registered — the number exists in the official register and can be used on customs declarations.
  • Invalid / not found — the number is not registered, not yet active, or mistyped. Check spelling and prefix first.
  • Invalid format — the value does not match the expected pattern (country code + identifier), e.g. GB123456789000.
  • Service unavailable — format may look correct, but HMRC or EU EOS did not respond. Retry in a moment.

GB numbers after Brexit

A UK GB EORI is not the same as an EU EORI. If you declare goods into the EU, you typically need a separate EU-issued number as well. Northern Ireland scenarios may require an XI EORI. Read our UK EORI guide for the full picture.

Can’t find your own number?

This tool validates a known EORI — it cannot search by company name. If you are looking for your own number, check HMRC letters, your accountant, or our find your EORI number guide. Still need to register? Follow how to get an EORI number.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes. You can validate as many EORI numbers as you need at no cost. No account or registration is required.

GB (Great Britain) via the free HMRC Check EORI API; XI (Northern Ireland) and EU member-state prefixes such as DE, FR, IT, IE, NL and ES via the EU EOS validation service when available.

Name and address are only shown when the trader has agreed to publish them (most common for GB via HMRC). A valid result without a name still means the number is registered and usable for customs declarations. EU/XI checks often return validity only.

Not with this tool — official validators require the EORI number itself. See our guide on checking EORI by company name for practical workarounds.

Double-check the country prefix and digits, remove spaces, and confirm the number has been activated. If you never received one, apply through HMRC (UK) or your EU member-state customs authority.

We cache validation responses briefly for performance. We do not build a public searchable database of the numbers you enter or sell that data.
